Grant Park/Butler Field

So I made it to "the event" last night, and it was truly an Obamapalooza. I don't know how many people, but it was a nothing but people. the link below is an aerial map of the area. Obama was in Grant Park, which was at least 140,000 people. I was in the park just above it which was completely packed by the time it started. So was Jackson Blvd out to Columbus Dr. We had a great spot right on Jackson in the front pretty close to the jumbtron.

HARMONY KORINE'S mr. lonely

The director of GUMMO and the writer of KIDS, Harmony Korine, never seems to be short of ideas that remain 100% his own. His love for the detached continues in MR. LONELY. The story of a Michael Jackson impersonator and a Marilyn Monroe impersonator who go away to start a perfect life on an island with other celebrity impersonators. I've been following this film for a while. It's finally on DVD! Harmony's films are truly in the independent spirit, and this seems to show more of a softer side than his previous. I really like the international trailer, but here are two trailers.

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE on Capitol

Rage Against the Machine had the plug pulled on them at the Capitol, but we all know that this would make the perfect time to Rage Against the Machine. Take a look at the piece MPR produced on the protest, then peep the a cappella performance. You'd think that Tom Morello would always have a guitar strapped to him, but the revolution must go on.

NEW JERSEY SCHOOL LOCKED DOWN AFTER SOMEONE REPORTS SEEING A 'NINJA' IN THE WOODS

Last update: June 25, 2008 - 1:57 PM

BARNEGAT, N.J. - It's the case of the nonexistent ninja. Public schools in Barnegat were locked down briefly after someone reported seeing a ninja running through the woods behind an elementary school.

Turns out the ninja was actually a camp counselor dressed in black karate garb and carrying a plastic sword.

Police tell the Asbury Park Press the man was late to a costume-themed day at a nearby middle school.

The lockdown began shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday and lasted until 9:30.

The New Chuck Adaptation, CHOKE

Since David Fincher knocked it out of the park, when he adapted Chuck Palaniuk's FIGHT CLUB, it left many wanting more adaptations of Chuck's dark comedy and social commentary. The studios have been teasing us by greenlighting a SURVIVOR adaptation, but continue to push back production. But alas, our thirst for psychotic satire is about to be quenched, with the big screen treatment of Chuck's book CHOKE

Vincent Mancini is a man who makes money for his mother's medical bills by pretending to choke on food in fancy restaurants. Once he is saved, his saviors often feel responsible for his life so they send him money. In Vincent's free time he likes to cruise the sexual addiction therapy groups for some kinky action. Classic CHUCK!

This film was the reason I wanted to be at SUNDANCE this year, where it took the Grand Jury Prize. And it also made an appearance in our own MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL. Sam Rockwell (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Snow Angels) has become one of my favorite actors, because of his choices in interesting roles. Enjoy the trailer, but I'm afraid we'll have to wait till September to see this film.

Hi

Hey guys, remember me?

I read Tito's post, and I immediately had 100 videos I wanted to put up so I twerked Adrock until I got an invite. I've been digging deep into funk/soul/disco/gheri-jams for a few years now, and there is an endless supply of tunage to find out there. I'm gonna start out with some great soul jams with an early early early Curtis Mayfield cut, which if you don't have a Curtis collection yet you are doing yourself wrong.

Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions - We're a Winner

The Detroit Emeralds - Baby Let Me Take You

Lyn Collin - Take Me Just As I Am (cuts short)

ps, I remember selling your dad Tower of Power tix Tito, I'm such a fool for not going to that show in retrospect. Thanks for the add ya'll!

soul or SOUL

I've grown tired of the U.K.'s offering of retro R&B soul. To me it seems more about gimmick than anything else and its not skin color that bothers me. Catching an acoustic version of Amy Winehouse "Rehab," I was completely floored by the complacency. And seeing Duffy on Conan, I was so unimpressed. And now we are being made to believe that Adele will show us a new way to appreciate something that was done up to 50 years ago.

There are some amazing performers today who can take something old and make it new in R&B. Hey, we got Sharon, Estelle, Erykah, and Mariah can even strike a chord with me. Yeah I said that, and you are a heartless fool if you can't appreciate the fact that "We Belong Together," has an amazing break down. Mark Ronson is amazing, The Dap Kings are my heart, and Pharrell is this generations Prince.

Tina gives me the chills, Diana Ross makes me happy, Otis is unbelievable, and Al Green is probably responsible for my existence. I grew up with R&B, soul, and funk in my house and its not a guilty pleasure its an obsession. And if there's one thing these new artists should do is make sure that the audience knows that there is a whole bunch of vinyl, eight tracks, cassetes, and mp3's that have an emotion that should be recorded and kept forever. And they should remember they have extremely hard acts to follow.

Ain't No Ordinary History Lesson

THE CHICAGO 10 is one of the most original pieces of filmmaking I have ever seen. It tells the story of the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where many non violent protesters assembled to demonstrate under the leadership of the YIPPIE activist group. However this film is not done like any conventional documentary would be done with testimonies from old hippies and old police officers. Instead the film is driven by archived footage and old recordings set to contemporary music and computer generated animation.

Aside from the convention THE CHICAGO 10 chronicles the trial that followed attempting to prosecute the YIPPIES for inciting riots and endangering police officers. The courtroom drama that takes place in the film is all taken from actual court transcript and is reenacted by CG animated characters and voice work done by amazing actors. What results is an amazing retelling of a time in history where our country was in a state of unrest and change was greatly wanted (sound familiar). The beauty of this film is that facts aren't recounted, but shown to you by all kinds of different media and heard from the mouth by the people who spoke, when they spoke.

Directed by Brett Morgen, who previously directed the awesome film THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE.

Opens this Friday, March 14 at the Lagoon Cinema for one week.

BAD VAGINA!!

This film was a mystery to me during my time at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Is it a horror film? Is it a comedy? Is it a bizarre social commentary? Everyone I spoke to had trouble trying to describe the film, but all agreed it was an interesting piece of work.

TEETH is the story of Dawn, a high school student in the middle of her "awkward years." Passionate about saving herself for marriage, she participates in her high school's Chastity Club, and practices a moral lifestyle. When her boyfriend becomes a little agressive she discovers she has a special ability only known to some as mythology. They call it Vagina Dentata when a young woman possesses teeth in her lady parts. And it certainly doesn't help with the awkwardness of being young woman getting to know her body. Let alone being one the young men who may be "interested" in Dawn.

...yeeesh

I missed this once, I won't miss it again.

Maddening

So I'm up late last night, waiting for my computer to perform some function that has me plopped on the couch in anticipation, when I come across one of my favorite music videos of all time, Radiohead's "Knives Out." I don't know what it is about this video. The fact that the images or so bizarre, the fact that the song is haunting, or the fact that it appears that michel gondry just recreated one of his nightmares and set it to music. Here's a reminder of the genius of Radiohead and Michel Gondry.

Who's Ready for the Floor!?!?

Even two years is too long to wait for a new album from HOT CHIP. I don't think any other band has made me want to dance more than this group. We have, however, been given small tastes of new material such as, "My Piano," off the DJ KICKS compilation and an early leaking of the new video "Ready for the Floor," off their new album, Made in the Dark. The new album is released this Tuesday, February 4th, but it still seems like torture to wait for what promises to be the dance album of the year, much like their previous releases. See you on the floor!

Who the Hell is Crispin Glover?

Aside from being the clumsy, passive, patriarch of the McFly Family, or the king of his own rat colony in "Willard," Crispin Glover has made a name for himself as a director. I'm sure that working with subversive filmmakers like David Lynch, Jim Jarmush, Oliver Stone, and Gus Van Sant helped to construct his directorial debut that will be playing this week at the Oak St. Cinema.

"What is It?" is the story of young man who struggles internally, and externally in the world. His primary interests are snails, salt, a pipe and how to get home. A majority of the characters have down syndrome, however, this film is not about the disability, and features Crispin Glover's voice who torments his star as the racist inner psyche. If you are a fan of the surreal and bizarre experimental film of David Lynch or Jim Jarmusch, I'm sure you will enjoy this film.

A Q&A and book signing will follow the screening, as I'm sure there will be lots to talk about after seeing what promises to be a mind trip of a movie.
